The light of God's Word | Back to articles | Articles sitemap |

It’s funny how God will reveal simple but essential truths to us in our every day lives. The other day I was outside mowing the lawn when I noticed a piece of wood lying on the ground. It was about three square feet and had been blown over by the wind (it was leaning against the house). I bent down to pick up the board and as I did I noticed all the grass that was underneath the board had died. At that moment the Lord spoke to my spirit.

He said: “This grass has died because of the absence of light. In the same manner, without My word, which is nourishment for the soul, and the light of Christ, which is life giving power, the spirit of a believer can neither be sustained or grow.” It’s amazing how the same old situation with a word from God can reveal such a divine perspective on things.

As believers, we must continually dwell in God’s Word. If we go one day without physical food we feel like we are starving. The body becomes weakened, we grow tired quicker, and if the hunger persists for long enough things like nutritional value and health become irrelevant, we would just want food!

Spiritually speaking, it’s the exact same way. Our spirits need to be fed. I will even dare to say that our spirits need to be fed more then our bodies. Like the body, when the spirit is deprived of spiritual food, which is God’s Word, it becomes weakened, tired and more susceptible to spiritual attacks from satanic forces.

Proper physical food maintains your body’s health. A healthy body has immunity to many sicknesses and diseases. An unhealthy body is much more susceptible to sickness and diseases. Again, this can be applied to the spirit. Proper spiritual food maintains our spirit’s health. God’s Word is the only excellent and wholesome food for our spirit. It is the only proper food because there is only one truth. There is a lot of other spiritual food that we can digest, however just like high fat foods destroy the body, so can the wrong spiritual food corrupt and destroy the spirit. A lack of proper spiritual nutrition, that is, a lack of reading and obeying the Bible, will cause a drastic decrease in your spiritual immunity. In other words temptations and trials will be more frequent in your life. Satan will have more access and control in your affairs.

Spiritual starvation opens the doorway of our hearts to darkness. An adult’s body cannot be healthily sustained by eating a baby’s portion of food. In the same manner, an advanced Christian who has walked with the Lord for many years cannot then survive from a new or “baby” Christian’s diet.

Understand that if we allow Satan to cut us off from our spiritual food supply we will starve to death. A spiritually starving Christian is Satan’s favourite kind of Christian because they are ineffective and powerless against Him. It is the light of God’s Word and Christ that allows you to effectively combat Satan. Trying to successfully fight off Satan without the power of God’s Word and the name of Jesus is like trying to breath in space without a spacesuit: you’re not going to do it.

Jesus said “…I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12 NKJV) To follow Jesus we must know, understand and obey what He asks of us. To know what Jesus demands of us we must read God’s Word. Reading God’s Word is what reveals truth. Obeying it produces His light in our hearts and lives. From this we can see that constant and continual study of the Word of God is necessary for all true believers, so that we may effectively live the lives God has called us to live. God’s Word is truth, and truth is the light that pierces the darkness.

Remember that more then anything truth is what we must seek. If we do not have the truth, how do our beliefs benefit us? We may believe in any God we want to, however if that God is not the true God then how is it profitable to serve that false God? If we trust in what is false, then our hope is false, and all our labor in our false belief is in vain.

There is no light other then Jesus Christ, neither is there found truth anywhere but in Him. Anyone who claims to be in the truth but denies Christ is deceived.  If you don’t know God’s Word you cannot know God’s Son Jesus. Likewise, if you don’t know Jesus, you cannot possibly know God the Father. You can only get to know God by diligently reading His word; you can’t have a relationship with anyone you don’t know.

The light of God’s Word reveals the truth in every situation. When we walk into a dark room we automatically search the wall for the light switch so that we can see. If you tried to navigate the dark room without the light, chances are you would bump into or trip over an object of some sort and possibly injure yourself. Also the darkness would prevent you from multiple activities like reading, cooking, and cleaning. The darkness is a deception. Before the light is turned on everything looks black and empty, but in reality the room is full of objects. Just like a light bulb illuminates a room, the light of God’s Word pierces the spiritual darkness and reveals the truth.

The light of God’s Word will always, without fail, reveal the truth in life. Satan will tell you that no one loves you or cares about you. God’s Word pierces that dark deception with its light and reveals to us that “God so loved the world (that includes you), that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

Satan will tell you that you’ve done too much evil in your life. He’ll tell you that God could never forgive you for such evil things. God’s Word, once again exposing Satan’s lie tells us that “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

God’s Word is like a great flashlight. Things may appear to be one way, but when the light is moved over them the truth is revealed. The major cause of repetitive sinful living is the lack of light in our lives. The Bible says “With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalms 119:10,11)

Committing ourselves to studying the Bible brings light into our lives. It is the light that is life changing power. A constant supply of God’s truth into your life will allow you to keep from sin. Reading the Bible, listening to teaching tapes, singing praise to God, regularly going to church; these things will fill your heart and spirit with the light of God’s Word and your feet will walk the path of righteousness.

Light and darkness cannot occupy the same space. Therefore seek the light and cling to it when you find it. If you hold onto the light of God’s Word it will keep you from evil. "But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day." (Proverbs 4:18)

For the light of God’s Word to shine in your life it must not only be read and believed, but spoken as well. A light bulb is always connected to an electrical outlet however there is not always an electrical current passing through the wires. The electrical current only travels to the bulb when the switch is flipped or activated. In the same manner, though God’s Word may be present in your heart, it still needs the activator of faith. By speaking the Word of God, by your faith, you bring God’s Word to life in your life. Speaking the Word is like flipping on the light switch. Whenever a dark situation presents itself in your life shine the light of God’s Word onto that circumstance by speaking faith backed promises from God. The light of His Word will break the strongholds of the devil.

God’s Word will bring you from victory, to victory to victory. Beware the busyness of life however. Like anything else, if we want something to be a part of our life we have to make time for it. All of us have the same amount of time however we all have different priorities. What is first priority in your life today?

We spend the greatest lengths of time on the things we most value. We will always make time for the things we want to do. Where you spend your money also indicates what you value. I challenge you today to examine your heart. Is God first priority in your life? Are you doing all that you can do to serve Him today? Have you made it a point in your life to set aside time to spend reading God’s Word?

I encourage you to set a time where you and God can come together. As Christians we need to spend time in God’s Word and we need to spend time in prayer. Saturate yourself in the Word of God. Let it fill your heart and spirit to overflowing so that the light of God’s Word will shine brightly in you, and bring light and truth to all your circumstances. Fill you heart with God’s Word to overflowing and your mouth will automatically speak His truth “… for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34)

Finally brothers and sisters, “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” (Romans 13:12)

Amen.
